ABOUT THE ARTIST Linda Erickson
BA from Florida State University in Art with Dance minor (1973)
MFA from University of North Carolina, Greensboro in Choreography (1976)
I was finally able to pursue my passion for dance in college. At age 19 I was at a disadvantage to consider dancing as a possible career but it did not prevent me from learning all I could to be a choreographer. As an undergraduate I was encouraged by the faculty to choreograph in many workshops for the department. This is when I discovered Mr. Beethoven as I spent many hours listening to music with the new purpose of choreographing. I went on to get an MFA in choreography by age 26.
In 1977 I started working with the New York City Ballet. My official title was assistant to the manager but I was given permission by George Balanchine to use some of the dancers from the company and the school for performances around the city. While at NYCB I was also involved in a small company with principle dancers Patricia McBride and Jean Pierre Bonnefous. About 5 years later I left the New York City Ballet and started a small professional company with former NYCB principle dancer Frank Ohman. Our company, The New York Dance Theater, performed in many venues in New York and opened the arts program at The Arts At St. Ann’s in Brooklyn.
I left New York in 2001 and moved to Frenchtown, New Jersey. There I was given the opportunity to choreograph for the “Performance Company of Ballet Classique” for 4 years until the company folded. Presently I live in New Hope, PA and started a dance company here in 2012 called Europium Dancetheater. It could be considered more avant-garde than traditional dance although ballet is still an integral part of the performances. Whenever possible I use a little Beethoven.
My interest and love of Beethoven evolved over the years. Although I have used some of his music for choreography my dedication to him is separate. Besides his birthplace in Bonn, Germany I have visited most of his residences in and around Vienna where he lived most of his life. I have met with Beethoven scholars in New York and Vienna to discuss his life and influence. I have spent many hours discussing Beethoven with professional musicians and attended many forums and lectures. Learning about Beethoven is a gift that keeps on giving.
